Too, as a nature and wildlife photographer, (I have ADHD, I can’t do just one type of photography), I’ve met very few other nature and wildlife photographers who make that much from licensing and selling. Even some of the best known folks who I’ve met will usually pull under $100k/year from sales and licensing. Teaching is a big part of my nature and wildlife income. Because so many people are interested in birding or taking trips to once-in-a-lifetime locations where they’ll see a lot of wildlife there’s demand for nature and wildlife photography teachers.

Putting all of that aside, when I’m teaching photographers how to budget and inevitably get the question of how much to charge I give them a formula based on what they need to make to survive and or thrive. That said, knowing what is possible in your particular market is critical to that formula. If, as you said, you live in a economically depressed small town with a low cost of living then advertising weddings starting at $20k might be a really hard sell. That said, some people can pull that off.
